Emerald Republic Brewing
𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄: We are going to wait for slightly cooler weather to eat some steamed sandwiches.
It’s finally happening.
A while back on one of our posts, we shared the story of how our parking lot across from the brewery used to be Al’s Castle Bar.
A former employee of Al’s Castle Bar and shared the story of Al’s Castle Bar over a pint. She told us about Al, the original owner from the 1940s, who was a transplant from Chicago. The bar started out simple but later introduced amazing steamed sandwiches. Al made it a point to bring in meats from Chicago and bread from New Orleans.
In the 1960s, Al hired Tom Hugo and eventually passed down the bar to him with the promise to keep the recipes and continue sourcing from Chicago and NoLa.
Eventually, Al’s Castle Bar disappeared from Pensacola’s history in a mysterious fire that leveled the building.
But here we are in 2024 with an exciting event. Thanks to Stacey, the former employee, we learned some secrets of the menu and the popularity of Al’s famous drinks. With her help, we’re bringing back some cherished items and are hosting an event in homage to Al and his legacy. Our friends at Short Fuse Pizza, who already make amazing sandwiches, are reviving some of Al’s specialties. At ERBC, we’re excited to bring back some of his famous cocktails and drinks. Short Fuse did the job and is sourcing the bread and ingredients from their respective locations.
This will be a fun event for fans of sandwiches, good drinks, nostalgia, and Pensacola history.
